چکیده

Fifty rice varieties collected under different categories from various sources were grown at the BRRI field during the 2001 transplant aman season ( July–November). Precautions were taken during harvest and processing to prevent mineral contamination. All samples were hand-pounded before being analyzed for iron and zinc content. The iron and zinc content varied considerably within the different categories of rice measured. Overall, the local varieties had a higher content of iron and zinc than highyielding varieties. Furthermore, the present study confirms that the aromatic rice varieties in general have higher iron and zinc content than non-aromatic rice varieties. A positive correlation between the iron and zinc content of milled rice was found in the varieties measured. Based on preliminary iron and zinc data, the researchers selected about 34 varieties as parent materials for use in the breeding program. The Breeding Division of BRRI has undertaken a crossing program to incorporate or accumulate iron-density regulatory genes in popular modern varieties of rice.

Identification of Iron rich rice genotypes in Bangladesh using chemical analysis

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most important food crop of the developing world and the staple food of more than half the global population. An experiment was carried out to identify the iron rich rice genotypes. Total fifty two rice genotypes were used for this purpose. Iron (Fe) content of rice grain samples was determined by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). In this process the...

Utilization of Urea and Urease Treated Rice Straw by Indigenous Growing Cattle

The experiment was conducted to study the effect of treatment of rice straw with urea and a urease containing midden soil on the chemical composition of treated rice straw, feed intake of the animals, nutrients digestibility, body weight gain, feed conversion efficiency and overall economy of feeding for a period of 105 days. Twelve indigenous growing cattle (live weight 130.00±1.67 kg) were se...

Rice grain nutritional traits and their enhancement using relevant genes and QTLs through advanced approaches

BACKGROUND Rice breeding program needs to focus on development of nutrient dense rice for value addition and helping in reducing malnutrition. Mineral and vitamin deficiency related problems are common in the majority of the population and more specific to developing countries as their staple food is rice. RESULTS Genes and QTLs are recently known for the nutritional quality of rice. By compr...

Rice Enrichment by Genetic Engineering for Combating Iron and Zinc Deficiency

Iron deficiency anemia and zinc deficiency are among the most recognized forms of micronutrient malnutrition and about two billion of people around the world suffer from it.  Monotonous diets based on staple cereals are in fact a poor source of iron and zinc. Rice is a staple food for more than half of the world's population. Various methods have been proposed for food enrichment, but many of t...

Relating the Bangladeshi Diet to Iron Deficiency

This chapter develops a comprehensive longitudinal model for the proximate determinants of hemoglobin concentration using three repeated observations on 514 women in Bangladesh. The explanatory variables in the model were nutrient intakes, including bioavailable iron; anthropometric measurement; morbidity involving blood loss; and intake of iron tablets. Bioavailable iron, women’s height and mi...
